When I wrote last week’s post, I lit a fire, I had no idea what I would write next after that. I know ended the post saying that I will talk more about the issue, but frankly I had no clue what I would write. Haha!
Why? Well let’s just say I’m still in the process. I’m in a school of sorts where I’m learning each day. I’m not an expert on sexual purity; I don’t have a Bachelors degree in ‘God’s view about man and sex’ and I haven’t written a 50 page thesis on the doctrine of sexual purity, if there be one.
I’m simply a girl who’s gone through this experience, and I feel the urge to share this journey and what I’m learning daily because I know we are all there – the comment section, whatsapp texts and facebook inboxes from you guys definitely prove it. *thanks a bunch by the way -)
So please don’t look at me as this superwoman who has got it all figured out. I’m just like you; a simple girl who loves God being transformed by Him every day.
After that post, I worried a lot, I must admit, over what I would write. The more I worried, the more I didn’t find anything to write. So I finally gave up worrying and decided to just flow with God. I put the writing aside and went on with my normal days. (Most of that has involved a lot of eating and sleeping. I just finished my internship so time is on my hands -)
Anyway, during that time God has been teaching me. And one of the things He has been teaching me is the why. Why should I not have sex before marriage? Why should I abstain?” I mean every one’s doing it right?
So last night He told me, “Ivy why don’t you share what you’ve learnt so far”
And I was like, “you know what, that’s a great idea.” -) So here goes.
1. The number one thing which is quite obvious is the fact that it is a command.
1st Thessalonians 4:3-8 It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit. (NIV)
I think in this age we live in we have really thought we can make a fool of God. That we can sing Jesus I love you and live comfortably in our sins and He’s gonna turn a blind eye to it. I thought so too and I convinced myself that I can practice some of his commands and ignore others and God will be cool with it. But His commands are absolute and we can debate all day about it but it won’t change the fact that He commanded and the fact that if we do contrary to that there will be consequences of sinning.
2. The second one is from 1 Corinthians 6:18, Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.
I find it immensely profound that the maker of all the heaven and earth would choose to live in this simple human called Ivy. He chose my body to be a temple.
We all know how temples are. People honor and respect them. They fill them with treasures of all kinds and ensure that nothing impure gets in. That’s why in the olden times they would do a thousand rituals to cleanse themselves lest they entered in and defiled the temple that housed God’s presence.
Do you realize how special you are? Do you realize who lives in you and how Holy is? The same way the temple was honored, the same we should honor our bodies. Our bodies are not objects to be touched by every passerby or anyone who likes what they see. Your body is a precious temple and precious items are not just touched or handled by anyone.
3. The final one was an analogy that I used to explain to a friend of mine. I’m not sure where this analogy came from, if it was from God or my mind I have no idea, but it seemed to explain the scenario quite well.
Let’s say you are in a relationship with this amazing guy/girl who is madly in love with you and you are madly in love with him. One day you and your bae are hanging out as usual, telling each other the sweet ‘somethings’. Then this buddy of yours walks in, sits next to you, and without a care in the world, you start making out and holding each other and playing the real life version of ‘cha mama’ in front of your bae. And he/she is just sitting there of course in full shock watching as you disrespect him/her and this beautiful love you have for each other.
(Pause and imagine that)
It’s an ugly scene right? You’d have to be crazy to do that right? But isn’t that what we do? When we know that Christ lives in us and we are in a relationship with Him?
And I don’t even think that analogy explains just how disgusting, disrespectful and hurting it is to God every time we choose to indulge in lustful desired. I think it still falls short because the guy is just beside you watching, but for you, God lives in you.
You are a temple of the Holy Spirit my dear – and at this point I should note that you are only a temple of God if you have accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour of your life. If you haven’t, my dear it’s the high time that you did. He died for you and He is knocking at your door, as you read this asking you to leave your sinful ways and follow Him and pursue life in Him. But if you are born again and like me you kept justifying sexual sin, swirry please listen to God. Turn and run.
These are things I’m learning after having defiled my temple and I wish I hadn’t been stubborn before. God was always speaking but I chose to ignore
So I pray that this will be more than a nice post. I pray that after this you will be convicted to just go to God, be honest with Him, and ask Him to help you. Ask Him to help you understand just how valuable your temple is, and his commands. Ask Him to help you keep them. I know He is able and He will help you.
Ps;I have some guys who’ll be sharing their stories about sex and purity soon, so hang around-)
